After igniting the war with the first iteration of the 350hp naturally aspirated E55 , upping the game from the first BMW M5s, -Benz’s in-house tuning arm, , has decided to turn with the tide and call an end to the , with the division boss Volker Mornhinweg saying, “We are going to use other ways to extract better performance, including weight saving, engine optimization and alternative technologies.”

What’s more interesting is that Mornhinweg went on to say “ is developing a new platform below the C-class which has possibilities.” Raising speculation that is plotting a hot version of the next A-class, which will be available as a coupe.

The boss also hinted that diesel, hybrid and 4-cylinder petrol models could also be in the cards, but that they would not be off-the-shelf solutions. They would have to be engineered to match the characteristics that customers expect from .

It seems not too long ago, thinking about an A-Class would have been beyond belief, but this is the future of the 3 most powerful letters in the automotive world.
