AMG Boss Declares The Horsepower Wars Are Over
Posted by Admin on January 29, 2009After igniting the war with the first iteration of the 350hp naturally aspirated E55 AMG, upping the game from the first BMW M5s, Mercedes-Benz’s in-house tuning arm, AMG, has decided to turn with the tide and call an end to the horsepower wars, with the division boss Volker Mornhinweg saying, “We are going to use other ways to extract better performance, including weight saving, engine optimization and alternative technologies.”
So how are they going to keep from sullying the good name of AMG? Getting the most out of the least. AMG is going to do that by losing weight, installing tech like the SL63 AMG’s wet clutch gearbox on the coming E63 AMG, and possibly re-engineering Mercedes’ diesel, hybrid, and four-cylinder engines for AMG duty.
What’s more interesting is that Mornhinweg went on to say “Mercedes is developing a new platform below the C-class which has possibilities.” Raising speculation that AMG is plotting a hot version of the next Mercedes A-class, which will be available as a coupe.
The AMG boss also hinted that diesel, hybrid and 4-cylinder petrol models could also be in the cards, but that they would not be off-the-shelf solutions. They would have to be engineered to match the characteristics that customers expect from AMG.
It seems not too long ago, thinking about an A-Class AMG would have been beyond belief, but this is the future of the 3 most powerful letters in the automotive world.
